What is Flexible Sigmoidoscopy? | MedStar Health

This is a procedure in which the patient is sedated and a small flexible tube is passed through the rectum and advanced through to the sigmoid colon. This procedure only allows for visualization of the last part of the colon. Like a colonoscopy, this procedure uses video technology to evaluate the lining of the colon and to obtain any tissue samples, remove polyps, and biopsy any necessary site. This procedure will involve a bowel preparation as well that will be recommended by your provider.
