Types of Treatments for Meningioma | MedStar Health
Meningiomas require an exceptional level of skill to resect (surgically remove) because they are often located near delicate structures within the brain or spinal cord and are difficult to access. At MedStar Health, we bring together leaders in neurosurgery whose skills and ability to collaborate provide the safest, most effective procedures possible. Before treatment, you will go through an extensive evaluation and planning session with our multidisciplinary team of experts to ensure your treatment is tailored to your tumor and lifestyle.

Treatments

  • Observation, supported by advanced brain imaging
  • Microsurgery

  • Endoscopy

  • CyberKnife radiosurgery

  • The most technologically advanced radiation treatments available, including MRT and 3-D CRT

Microsurgery

Your physician may recommend microsurgery to remove part or all of your meningioma if it’s causing symptoms or is growing. In microsurgery, your neurosurgeon uses an operating microscope, specialized instruments, and advanced techniques to surgically remove the tumor.

Endoscopy

Meningiomas of the skull base can be resected (surgically removed) using a minimally invasive technique called neuroendoscopy. In neuroendoscopy, your brain tumor is removed through your nose using an endoscope (a thin, flexible lighted tube equipped with a high-definition camera). The procedure typically doesn’t require any incisions and usually means a shorter hospital stay and less recovery.

At MedStar Health, this procedure is performed as a true team surgery, with ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialists and expert neurosurgeons working side by side to remove the tumor.

CyberKnife radiosurgery

CyberKnife radiosurgery can be a standalone treatment or used with microsurgery or neuroendoscopy. It’s a non-invasive radiation treatment utilizing high-powered X-rays, computers, robotics, and image-guidance technology to pinpoint and destroy small tumors.

CyberKnife is the only system of its kind that can accurately deliver radiation to moving tumor targets, adjusting for even the tiniest movements you make while breathing to limit exposure to healthy tissue nearby.

Since skull base meningiomas are often located close to important nerves and blood vessels, including those responsible for sight, CyberKnife’s precision is crucial in helping your physician avoid complications, like blindness and gate disturbance (an abnormal way of walking).
