Funds Donated Support Research, Equipment, and Survivor Support Programs

Washington, D.C., December 30, 2015 – The D.C. Firefighters Burn Foundation has donated $119,500 to The Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center to assist with burn research, rehabilitation materials, burn equipment and pain management tools, as well as survivor support programs.

The Foundation has provided financial, emotional, and survivor support programs for youth and adult burn survivors, along with injured firefighters throughout the Washington D.C. metro-area, for 11 years.

“The support we receive from the Foundation enables us to continue to offer cutting-edge and innovative care to our patients,” said Jeffrey Shupp, MD, director of The Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. “Much of our aftercare program and scientific research would not exist without their support.”

Approximately 25 firefighters are treated at the Burn Center each year, due to burns suffered on the job. The Foundation’s president says the donation helps give all survivors what they need to pull their life back together.

“Our job is to save lives and property, but we also want to ensure that persons we save from a fire also have a good outcome,” said Jason Woods, president of the D.C. Firefighters Burn Foundation.

The Burn Center at the Hospital Center is the only adult burn treatment center in the Washington Metropolitan area. The 20-bed facility meets stringent criteria for qualification by the American Burn Association. More than 400 acute burn-injured patients are admitted for treatment each year, and are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of experts, dedicated to improving the lives of all patients affected by burn injury.
