About the Provider

A former Olympic athlete himself, Dr. Johnson’s personal experience and professional expertise give him unique insight to all aspects of Sports Medicine, as well as joint replacement, and general orthopaedic surgery.  He is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery in Sports Medicine. 
While attending Yale College, he was an All-American swimmer and a member of the US National Swimming Team.  Dr. Johnson set several American records and was a member of the 1968 Olympic Swimming Team during which he competed on the gold medal winning 4 x 200m freestyle relay.  After graduating from Yale College School of Medicine, Dr. Johnson completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at George Washington University and was a visiting scientist at the National Institutes of Health, performing research in arthritis. 

Dr. Johnson’s passion as an athlete continued into his career as an orthopaedic surgeon.  He was the physician for all skating events at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, NY which included the “Miracle on Ice” gold medal hockey team.  In addition to being the team physician for multiple US National Swimming Teams, he has also been the meet physician for the World Cup Swimming Championships at the University of Maryland.  He has been an orthopaedic and medical consultant for the President’s Council for Physical Fitness and Sports, the 2012 Washington/Baltimore Olympic bid, and a member of the Olympic Alumni Advisory Group for the 2012 Olympic bid.  Dr. Johnson also served as the Assistant Orthopaedic Surgeon for the Washington Nationals baseball team through 2015 and the team physician for Catholic University.  He was instrumental in the creation of a sports medicine clinic at Georgetown University.

In addition to treating athletes of all skill levels, Dr. Johnson also treats ballet dancers from the across the United States.  He has worked with professional dancers from the Washington Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem, Houston Ballet, and nationally touring companies of Broadway shows performing at the Kennedy Center, Warner Theater, and the National Theater. 
Dr. Johnson is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Georgetown University.
