About me

Rachael D. Sussman, MD, is a urologist at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center, providing care to both male and female patients. Her areas of clinical expertise include voiding dysfunction, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, female urethral disease (diverticulum and stricture), and vaginal fistula. Dr. Sussman is an expert in minimally invasive and vaginal surgery.

After graduating from medical school at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Sussman completed her internship and residency in urology at MedStar Georgetown, where she served as chief resident. She completed a fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (Urogynecology) at New York University. Dr. Sussman grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut and earned her bachelor’s degree in Economics and Spanish at Wesleyan University. Prior to medical school, she worked as a social worker, developing a strong bedside manner and cultivating the skills needed to help people with their most personal issues.

Dr. Sussman is currently an active member of the Society of Urodynamics Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) and the American Urologic Association (AUA), She has authored articles in multiple prestigious publications including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Urology, and Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology.

Dr. Sussman’s philosophy of care is to approach her patients as teammates, working together to ensure that their specific needs, lifestyles, personal preferences, cultures and goals are taken into consideration when deciding on a treatment plan. She coordinates care with other healthcare providers including physical therapists, gynecologists, and colorectal specialists to create the best approach to managing pelvic and urologic disorders.

In her spare time, Dr. Sussman enjoys traveling, biking, experimenting in the kitchen with her two children, and spending time with her family.
