About the Provider

Cynthia Marie Carver DeKlotz, MD, is a pediatric and adult dermatologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. DeKlotz is board-certified in internal medicine, dermatology, and pediatric dermatology, with specific training and expertise in pediatric dermatology. At Georgetown University School of Medicine, she is Co-Director of Immunology, Rheumatology, Dermatology Module, an assistant professor of Clinical Medicine and Pediatrics, and serves on the Subcommittee on Evaluation and Assessment.

Dr. DeKlotz specializes in complex pediatric medical dermatology with a special interest in genetic skin disease and laser procedures for adults and children. As part of her work at Georgetown, Dr. DeKlotz collaborates with experts in other specialties, including a medical geneticist, to help improve patient experience and outcomes. She is dedicated to finding the root cause of skin disorders and looks for a connection to cutaneous presentations and systemic or internal disease. Her clinical and research interests focus on genodermatoses, laser surgery, vascular anomalies, and general medical dermatology.

Dr. DeKlotz graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from Auburn University. She received a Gates-Cambridge Scholarship to the University of Cambridge (Cambridge, England), where she graduated with honors in Parts III Mathematics and received a Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics. She then attended Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and Alpha Omega Alpha. After completing residency at Georgetown University Hospital/Washington Hospital Center, she completed a pediatric dermatology fellowship at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, an affiliate of the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. DeKlotz has an extensive research background. During her pediatric dermatology fellowship, she became directly involved in clinical trials focusing on genetic skin disease. As a new faculty member at MedStar Washington Hospital Center/MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, she catapulted that research interest into establishing clinical trials as Principal Investigator and co-founded a genodermatosis multidisciplinary clinic at MedStar Georgetown. She has extensive clinical research experience, serving as Site Principal Investigator for six clinical trials and sub-investigator for three, and has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications. Her current research is aimed at investigating new diagnostic tools and treatments for syndromic birthmarks, including vascular lesions. In 2018, she was awarded a MedStar Health Research Institute New Investigator-Associate Giving Grant for research investigating colorimetric analysis differences between two vascular birthmarks, infantile hemangiomas and port wine stains.

As part of her passion for genetic skin disease, Dr. DeKlotz serves on the Scientific Advisory Council of the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias and is actively involved in the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance, serving on numerous committees. She actively serves as a journal reviewer for JAMA Dermatology and Pediatric Dermatology. She is a member of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, American Academy of Dermatology, and European Society for Dermatological Research.

Philosophy of Care
“My philosophy of care is guided by the Latin phrase curas personalis, which translates to ‘care for the whole person.’ I truly believe in caring for the entire person, and I work toward fulfilling that philosophy with each of my patients.

“Skin disease can affect so many aspects of one’s life. In order to develop a treatment plan that is best for the patient, I find it important to understand a patient’s concerns and how a skin condition may be affecting his/her quality of life. In addition, it is important to me that my patients feel respected, listened to, and cared for while under my care.”
