Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Cites Devotion to Care
Washington, D.C., - March 11, 2013 - The National Capital Area Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has honored Veronica Stack, RN, OCN, as 1st runner up for Hematology/Oncology Nurse of the Year.
Stack, who has served as an oncology nurse at Washington Cancer Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center for more than 16 years, was nominated by one of her patients. The patient, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “Despite being busy, Veronica always makes time to spend with patients. She is observant and cautious. She notices and fixes errors before they become a problem. She remembers details about her patients and truly seems to listen and pay attention. She is devoted to good care.”
Stack received a plaque in a surprise presentation this morning. “A lot of our patients just go through so much and it’s nice that they think of you,” she said. “I get more from them than they get from me.” The Silver Spring, Md., resident called this recognition humbling. “I was really touched,” she said. “It just makes me feel what I do is worthwhile.”
Stack gives a lot of the credit to her co-workers. Her colleague, Eun Sledz, RN, was recognized as an honorable mention.
