MedStar Washington Earns Prestigious Clinical Excellence Award

The Delmarva Foundation of the District of Columbia has once again bestowed MedStar Washington Hospital Center with its highest achievement, the 2013 Excellence Award for Quality Improvement.

Washington, D.C., June 20, 2013 – The Delmarva Foundation of the District of Columbia has once again bestowed MedStar Washington Hospital Center with its highest achievement, the 2013 Excellence Award for Quality Improvement.

The Delmarva Foundation, which is Medicare’s Quality Improvement Organization, recognizes hospitals that excel in patient safety and quality improvement in four national inpatient clinical areas: acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care improvement.,/p>

To receive the award, hospitals must meet or exceed the following criteria:

Individual performance measure rate must be 90 percent or above on 14 required measures for all four quarters of calendar year 2012

An aggregate performance score of 96 percent or higher for the four quarters

The Hospital Center earned an overall score of 98.9 percent and scored 95 percent or higher on all 14 measures. In 11 of the categories, it achieved 98 percent or higher.

Orlowski, MD, MACP, chief operating officer/chief medical officer at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. "The Delmarva Foundation sets high standards and we strive to meet – and exceed – them at all times, for every patient we encounter."

The Hospital Center last received the Excellence Award in 2011. This year, it joins two other hospitals in the District honored with the achievement.
