Named as “Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality” by National Survey
Washington, D.C., July 11, 2013 – MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar National Rehabilitation Network, and MedStar Washington Hospital Center, have been recognized as “Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) 2013 report, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) organization. Each MedStar entity earned top marks for its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face challenges in accessing adequate healthcare.
The HRC Foundation released results of the HEI today at a ceremony at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, D.C.
“We are proud to receive this distinction and be recognized as a leader in treating LGBT patients and their families. MedStar Health prides itself on diversity in everything we do, especially patient care, for which we believe there should be no barriers,” said Stephen Evans, MD, executive vice president for Medical Affairs and chief medical officer for MedStar Health.
MedStar’s D.C. hospitals were just a few of a select group of 464 healthcare facilities nationwide to be named Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality. Facilities awarded this title meet key criteria for equitable care including non-discrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff members.
MedStar Health was congratulated by HRC Health & Aging Director Shane Snowdon. “LGBT patients deeply appreciate the welcoming environment provided by a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality,” said Snowden. “It makes a big difference to know that your local healthcare facilities are fully committed to giving you the same care they provide to your neighbors and co-workers.”
MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, located in Baltimore, also achieved the LGBT Healthcare Equality leader status.
