New Facility Compliments Hospital’s Commitment to High Quality Patient Care

WASHINGTON, D.C. January 28, 2014- MedStar Washington Hospital Center has dedicated the opening of its new Center for Excellence in Nursing (CEN), one of the few hospital-based nursing resource centers in the country. The learning lab is a state-of- the-art center that supports nursing innovation by providing a lifelong learning environment to bolster the clinical skills of more than 1,800 nurses at the Hospital Center.

“We are a patient-first organization, and we have always had a commitment to nursing excellence,” said Susan Eckert, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CENP, senior vice president and chief nursing executive, MedStar Washington Hospital Center. “As a major teaching and research facility in the Washington D.C. area, we can provide significant guidance on best practices in nursing.”

Through the support of many donors, including Hospital Center nurses, the Center for Excellence in Nursing generates cutting-edge research that leads changes in nursing best practices throughout the country. It also funds conference and travel support for professional education presentations and funds development and implementation of nursing education projects. In a controlled environment, nurses have the opportunity to practice specialized patient care by using mannequin simulations to convey real-life clinical situations.

“We have nurses who are experts in highly specialized clinical care, and we collect data and examine evidence to share their experience in peer-reviewed and academic journals and presentations,” said Eckert. “As a result, we not only help our own patients, but we help move the nursing profession forward.”
