Clinical Ethics Immersion

The Clinical Ethics Immersion (CEI) at the John J. Lynch, MD, Center for Ethics at MedStar Washington Hospital Center is the original experiential and simulation-based education program designed for busy professionals involved in clinical ethics. The CEI is an intensive 3 1⁄2 day course for physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health care professionals who are involved in clinical ethics and who want an in depth, hands-on hospital experience.

The John J. Lynch, MD Center for Ethics is one of the oldest, elite clinical ethics programs in the country. Unlike many others in its class, however, the Center’s philosophical bias is virtue, rather than being more heavily grounded in Enlightenment theory or a mediation approach. The CEI curriculum is framed so that Immersion participants learn to think more like physicians and other clinicians who take care of patients and families. The CEI helps participants better understand how clinicians, who must exercise sound, independent, ethical judgment, work together with clinical ethicists and members of their ethics committee to continually improve the care of their hospitalized patients.

The CEI is designed to advance participants’ knowledge and skills, emphasizing how one’s character matters to practicing clinical ethics. Participants round with clinical ethicists in intensive care units, respond to case consultations as they naturally arise, role play a family meeting, work on chart note entry skills, and discuss with program faculty clinical ethics practice as it plays out in various ways and parts of the hospital. These include law and ethics, intensive and emergent care medicine and surgery, psychiatry. In addition, participants will be put through simulated ethics consultations in MedStar’s state-of- the-art Simulation Training Environment Laboratory (SiTEL).

This program is hosted and presented by the faculty and staff of the John J. Lynch, MD Center for Ethics, joined by physicians, other clinicians, and ethics committee members from MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
