A Comprehensive Chronology

While MedStar Washington Hospital Center celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2008, its roots date far back into the history of Washington, D.C., thanks to the three well-respected hospitals that merged to form the Hospital Center. When Washington Hospital Center finally opened its doors in 1958, the event culminated nearly 15 years of planning among these three long-standing hospitals, whose leaders and volunteers originally envisioned a merger in the 1940s.

This Comprehensive Chronology begins in 1871 with the opening the Central Dispensary Hospital, and follows the progress of the predecessor hospitals, the merging phase, the opening day in 1958 and then 50 years of Washington Hospital Center's health care leadership in the nation's capital and beyond.
