Vice President, Nursing Excellence
Janis Donnelly, MBA, MS, BSN, is vice president, Nursing Excellence at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. She is responsible for budgeting for the Department of Nursing and oversees quality, safety and education for the Hospital Center’s 2,000 nurses and affiliated nursing staff. Additional responsibilities include scheduling and regulatory compliance.
Donnelly has been at the Hospital Center since 2009. She served in a variety of patient care and leadership positions, including director of Nursing Education and senior nursing director for Quality, Safety and Education. Her accomplishments at the Hospital Center include implementation of an electronic medical records system and launching a nationally-recognized nursing residency program for new-to-practice nurses.
Donnelly has 30 years of nursing experience, including leadership experience in peri-anesthesia, hospice and intensive care. She provided care for soldiers and civilians involved in the Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom campaigns at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and won a clinical excellence and service award for her work there.
Donnelly received her undergraduate degree in Nursing from the University of Maryland and holds two Master’s degrees, one in Education from Western Maryland College and one in Business from Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School. She is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the American Nurses Association and the National Association of Healthcare Quality.
