EGD (Esophagogastricduodenoscopy) is also known as an upper endoscopy. It is a procedure in which the patient is sedated and a small flexible tube is passed down through the mouth and guided down through the esophagus and stomach and into the top part of the small intestine.
This procedure also uses video technology to enable the endoscopist to visualize the lining of the small intestine, stomach, and esophagus. Using this procedure, the doctor will be able to look for inflammation, ulcers, masses, and other abnormalities.
At this time tissue samples may also be taken for biopsy. The doctor may also be able to perform stent placements, dilation of strictures, and banding of esophageal varices.
This test will require you to have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the day of the examination.
