Endoscopic Stent | MedStar Health

A narrowing within the gastrointestinal tract due to inflammation or malignancy can cause serious complications. A stent may be indicated to help open up the intestinal tract to allow for the normal passage of food, fluids, and gastrointestinal secretions. A plastic or metal stent can be placed in the narrowed section of the gastrointestinal tract during an upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, or ERCP. These stents may be temporary or permanent, but should allow for significant relief of symptoms.
