Esophageal manometry is a procedure indicated for patients experiencing difficulty swallowing, severe reflux or other esophageal problems. During the procedure a small flexible catheter is inserted down your nose and advanced down your esophagus and to your stomach. Before insertion, medication is applied to the nose and back of your throat to make it numb. The tube is connected to a computer. The nurse will have you swallow a small amount of liquid and the computer will measure the pressures in your esophagus as the liquid moves down your esophagus to your stomach. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.
