Our team includes some of the nation’s leading experts in pituitary tumors and pituitary disorders. Having performed hundreds of pituitary tumor surgeries, we are the most experienced facility with some of the top physicians in the Washington, D.C., region.

Edward Aulisi, MD, specializes in neurosurgery with expertise in diagnosing and treating pituitary disorders. As one of the leading neurosurgeons in the country, Dr. Aulisi has decades of experience in pituitary surgery using both open and endoscopic surgical approaches.
Dr. Aulisi is deeply committed to providing expert and compassionate care to patients at the MedStar Pituitary Center. He takes the time to ensure each patient understands their diagnosis and the best treatment options to meet their individual needs. This approach to care has led to excellent patient outcomes. After treatment, most patients are able to live healthy lives with no sign of pituitary disease.
In addition to his role as director of the MedStar Pituitary Center, Dr. Aulisi also chairs the MedStar Neurosurgery Department and serves as medical director of the MedStar Neuroscience Intermediate Care Unit. He's a neurosurgery professor at Georgetown University and fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Kenneth Burman, M.D., has decades of experience in researching and treating the full range of pituitary disorders. He specializes in pituitary endocrinology with expertise in treating thyroid cancer and other thyroid conditions. Dr. Burman leads the endocrinology team at the MedStar Pituitary Center.
Dr. Burman conducts some of the latest pituitary disease research, investigating better ways to treat pituitary tumors. Along with his team, he's committed to delivering the most effective care possible. Dr. Burman's research is essential to advancing the future of treatments for pituitary disorders.
A retired Army colonel, Dr. Burman is a professor of medicine at Georgetown University and director of the Endocrinology Fellowship Program at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
Susmeeta Sharma, M.D., is the director of pituitary endocrinology at the MedStar Pituitary Center. Dr. Sharma has extensive experience in evaluating and treating patients with pituitary disorders such as prolactinoma, Cushing’s disease, acromegaly, non-functioning pituitary tumors, adrenal insufficiency and other pituitary hormone deficiencies. Her clinical research interests include pathogenesis and diagnosis of hormonally active pituitary tumors as well as development of non-surgical treatment modalities for management of pituitary tumors.
Dr. Sharma is dedicated to providing patients with comprehensive personalized care. She evaluates each patient as a whole and works closely with her fellow specialists in endocrinology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology and neuroophthalmology to develop an effective, individualized treatment plan for each and every patient.
Before joining the MedStar Pituitary Center, Dr. Sharma completed a fellowship in reproductive and adult endocrinology with focus on pituitary and adrenal disorders at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She then stayed on as a junior faculty member and the Chief of outpatient endocrinology at NIH. Dr. Sharma enjoys mentoring young physicians along their path to clinical endocrinology and patient care and was honored with the Dr. Phillip Gorden Distinguished Clinical Teacher Award by the NIH Endocrinology fellowship program.
Neuro-ophthalmologists combine the subspecialties of neurology and ophthalmology. They care for patients who have neurological-related vision problems, helping patients avoid losing their vision or restoring normal vision.
Martin Kolsky, M.D., is a neuro-ophthalmologist at the MedStar Pituitary Center. Dr. Kolsky’s practice bridges the fields of neurology and ophthalmology. As director of neuro-ophthalmology at the MedStar Pituitary Center, he has a particular interest in treating patients with pituitary region disorders that affect vision. Dr. Kolsky is dedicated to providing advanced treatment options to patients with pituitary disorders.
Dr. Kolsky is there every step of the way for patients with vision problems related to pituitary tumors. He meets with patients, answers questions and performs advanced diagnostic tests to ensure an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Kolksy works closely with the rest of the team at the center to create individualized care plan recommendations.
Dr. Kolsky is a clinical professor of ophthalmology and neurology at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He’s committed to teaching the next generation of ophthalmologists how to provide expert, patient-centered care.
Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)
ENT specialists along with neurosurgery treat patients with pituitary disorders. Selected pituitary tumors can be removed via transnasal endoscopic approaches.
Stanley Chia, M.D., FACS, is the Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology. He is a highly skilled otolaryngologist at the MedStar Pituitary Center. As an otolaryngologist, Dr. Chia evaluates and treats disorders of the ear, nose and throat. He works closely with the neurosurgery team, helping perform complex pituitary surgeries that involve the nasal cavity or brain.
Dr. Chia provides patients the personalized, comprehensive care they need. He knows patients may have questions about their condition and the best treatment options. Dr. Chia is dedicated to working with patients to answer these questions and determine the best approach for their care.
Dr. Chia is also an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Georgetown University Hospital, where he has received awards for his teaching efforts.

Joseph Verbalis, MD, an internationally known researcher, focuses on complex posterior pituitary tumors. Dr. Verbalis is Professor of Medicine and Physiology, Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Co-Director of the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and Clinical Director of the Center for the Study of Sex Differences in Health, Aging and Disease at Georgetown University. He has published more than 250 journal articles and book chapters related to the neuroendocrine regulation of the hormones vasopressin and oxytocin, and disorders of body fluid homeostasis. His research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the last 20 years. Dr. Verbalis is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and has been awarded the Berthold Medal by the German Endocrine Society for outstanding scientific achievement in endocrinology by individuals who have excelled in combining both basic and clinical research.
Jessica Campillay, BS, CNRN, Jessica Campillay is a Certified Neuroscience Nurse. She has served as the Pituitary Nurse Navigator for the MedStar Pituitary Center since 2018.
As the Pituitary Nurse Navigator, Ms. Campillay helps patients and families understand symptoms, treatment, and care. She works closely with the MedStar Pituitary team, including Edward Fiore Aulisi, MD, and Varun Sharma, MD.
Prior to joining MedStar Health, Ms. Campillay worked at other Washington, D.C. area hospitals as an inpatient nurse. She has extensive experience in Stroke, Neuroscience, and Neuroscience Intensive Care (ICU) units. Ms. Campillay also worked as a Spine Nurse Navigator and Stroke Coordinator for the INOVA Spine Institute. She has served in multiple nursing leadership positions throughout her career.
Ms. Campillay earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at Northwest Nazarene University. She is currently working towards a Master of Science degree in Health Administration at George Mason University.
