Meningiomas require an exceptional level of skill to resect (surgically remove) because they are often difficult to access and located near delicate structures within the brain or spinal cord. At MedStar Washington Hospital Center, we bring together leaders in neurosurgery whose intense collaboration and superior skills allow us to deliver the safest, most effective procedures possible. Our meningioma care includes:
Before treatment, you will go through an extensive evaluation and planning sessions with our multidisciplinary team of experts to ensure your treatment is tailored to your tumor and lifestyle.
Our meningioma treatments include:
- Observation, supported by advanced brain imaging
- Gamma Knife radiosurgery
- The most technologically advanced radiation treatments available, including IORT, IMRT, and 3-D CRT
Your physician may recommend microsurgery to remove part or all of your meningioma if it’s causing symptoms or is growing. In microsurgery, your neurosurgeon uses an operating microscope, specialized instruments and advanced techniques to surgically remove your tumor.
Meningiomas of the skull base can be resected (surgically removed) using a minimally invasive technique called neuroendoscopy. In neuroendoscopy, your brain tumor is removed through your nose using an endoscope (a thin, flexible lighted tube equipped with a high definition camera). The procedure typically doesn’t require any incisions and usually means a shorter hospital stay and less recovery.
At MedStar Washington Hospital Center, this procedure is performed as a true team surgery, with ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialists and expert neurosurgeons working side by side to remove your tumor.
