The Eye Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center has a long history of serving the eye care needs of all residents of the Washington, DC, area. Founded in 1897 as part of the Episcopal Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, the Eye Center moved to Irving Street when Episcopal merged with two other hospitals – Garfield Memorial and Central Dispensary and Emergency – to create the state-of-the-art Washington Hospital Center.
The Eye Center boasts the first residency program of any kind in the metropolitan Washington area and is a comprehensive eye care facility, divided into 14 clinical areas: glaucoma, retina, ocular motility, contact lenses, low vision, cornea, oculoplastics, orbital disease, uveitis, neuro-ophthalmology, diagnostic testing, minor surgery and lasers, and, general ophthalmology, which includes cataract evaluation.
Most ophthalmic surgery is performed in 2 dedicated operating room suites, and care is provided by a range of ophthalmic specialists, including faculty ophthalmologists, ophthalmologists-in-training, and technicians. Our goal is to provide the very best eye care possible to all members of the area, regardless of financial status.
