The prostate is a male reproductive gland that surrounds the urethra, the channel that carries urine and semen out of the body. The gland becomes enlarged in almost all men as they age and puts pressure on the urethra, narrowing it and requiring more force to eliminate urine. Over time, the bladder muscle fails to overcome the effect of the narrowed urethra, and urine remains in the bladder.
An enlarged prostate is also referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland from multiplying cells.
